WOODHAVEN SCHOOL, PORTLAND, OR
Forest Preschool is seeking a Practicum/Student Teacher Candidate for the 2019-20 school year
Come experience the simplified rhythm of our Waldorf-inspired, nature based preschool program nestled in a 4-acre forest setting. Our little school in the woods is a parent-run cooperative with two hired teachers dedicated to fostering a lifelong love of learning in our children. Each preschool class is led by a friendly teacher and two parent teachers who work together to facilitate a magical environment where creative, child- driven play is encouraged.
Woodhaven School is offering a unique opportunity for a student currently enrolled in an early childhood education program, receiving Waldorf training, has been a parent teacher from a cooperative school, or a caregiver who has previously worked with young children. We invite a student seeking to fulfill practicum and student teaching requirements to observe our classrooms, participate in school days, and receive mentoring from our two teachers with Waldorf-inspired training. We will tailor our program to meet the needs of your training. The chosen candidate will attend classroom training along with our parents at the start of school in August or September, as well as a conflict resolution training in the fall. All class helpers are required to pass a statewide background check. Once the student is established in our mentorship program and familiar with our school, they may be called upon to substitute for the lead teachers on occasion.
The role of the intern is to participate and assist with activities following the class rhythm under the direction of our warm and welcoming teachers. Ideally, the right person will have flexibility in their schedule to visit all three of our classes at least 2 days per week from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm, for a minimum of 6 work days per month. We will provide opportunities to learn circle songs, movement, stories, and artistic crafts according to the seasons. You will learn how to make and serve a hearty snack such as, bread, rice, oatmeal, soup and join us for family-style meals. You’ll also experience the wonders of our outdoor space with about half of every class day spent playing in the forest and at our playground.
We operate five days a week providing three preschool classes where we nurture the growth and development of each child, ages 3- 6. For parents of younger children, ages 0 to 3, we offer our Sweet Peas classes on Tuesday & Thursday mornings, 10am -12pm where caregivers and children come together to enjoy snack, learn seasonal circle songs and rhymes, hear stories, and play in our peaceful, nurturing classroom under the guidance of one of our experienced teachers. We go outside no matter the weather to explore our beautiful woods and facilitate the children’s innate connection to the wonders of the natural world.
Children learn through active exploration and interaction with adults, peers, and materials. The curriculum emphasizes child choice rather than highly structured, teacher-directed lessons. Our preschool classes meet from 9 am to 1 pm:
● Daisy: Mondays, Wednesdays (all day outside), and Fridays
● Sunflower: Mondays, Wednesdays (all day outside), and Fridays
● Rosebud: Tuesdays and Thursdays
We are inspired by the elements of Waldorf education to reflect the sense of wonder and reverence that children experience in the natural world. Our curriculum centers on seasonal changes and observations of the natural world. Seasonal themes guide daily activities, and songs, storytelling, and puppets are used to spark young imaginations. Our program emphasizes humanitarian values and environmental awareness. The children observe and exercise their own imaginations and creativity through art, music, dramatic play, and hands-on exploration of simple toys, natural objects, and outdoor play.
